The Kaiser Edition

The truth about the Age of Conversation (Part 1 The Advisor Conspiracy).

This may surprise some people but I’m starting to find all of the chat about this being the age of conversation (social media and brands and corporations and customers) a little bit, well, wearisome.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, but this morning I popped over to the excellent craphammer and read this delightful post about corporate blogging and the personality of brands and that post kicked me to finish at least on of the ideas that has been banging around in my head.

You can also see the presentation here.

I suppose you could sum up the presentation with the lyrics from They Might Be Giants “ I Palindrome I”:

“And I am a snake head eating the head on the opposite side”.

If you think that others might been interested in this would you be so kind as to Stumble it?

  1. Nice Marcus…..have I won our bet yet?

  2. Oh I think you have yes. You get a pint of beer now. When I’m in London next. Which won’t be for a very long time.

  3. Seb

Brilliant, Marcus. That’s the best sliding story I’ve seen for a very, very long time. And so true. Two things I can’t say about the last powerpoint I saw.

  4. Awesome. I love it.

  5. Dude. Putting the comments on the TOP of your post is really fucking me up!!!

Reposting on the CORRECT story. ;)

    Hey Marcus,

Loved this! Would have been neat to have a “fake corporate sponsor” for the presentation! ;)

Have you seen this??? Along the same lines and AMAZING…

  6. Finally …

And you know EXACTLY what I mean by that ;)

  7. tee hee..
perhaps you could see if sacrum was feeling up to illustrating it? i loved his powerpoint drawings..

  8. Ben

Can you change the typography on slide 8 so that the little blah’s don’t get cut off, as you’ve done on slide 9. Thanks.

PS Slideshare of the day! Very funny.

  9. I’ll send you a “special edition” Ben. Maybe.

  10. Seb - thank you young man.

Sean - I will conisder making this blog “canadian friendly”.

Angus - thank you young plumber

Rob - yes I know what you mean. Use it wisely

    Lauren - I’m not Sacrum.

Ben - changes have been made. Which strewed up everything on Slideshare….

BUT I AM STILL SLIDESHARE OF THE DAY!

  11. Blah and Ha! That’s all I can say, Marcus ;-)

I am buying a refrigerator and as predicted I cannot find a stylish one that is not a walk in room. Those are the cases in which I miss Europe a lot.

  12. Nice canadian slag, there Marcus.

And no. You are NOT sacrum. But don’t fret. Few people can live up to the shoes that man? left behind! ;)

  13. As a corporate/government guy who’s in social media, this is genius Marcus! Genius.

Let me interject some good-spirited nay-saying here.

The slideshare post is really cute, clearly. But this conversation, these Conversations, have gone awry.

The video noted above by SEAN is real cute too, just like the Kaiser’s slideshare. The video makes the following statement, the kind of phraseology that’s parroted quite heavily in the Social Media Marketing blog space:

“The web gets really interesting when people pool their ideas, then they start to be really creative … because new ideas usually come through conversations”

This is a classic case of Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc — a self fulfilling prophesy within our industry to think that innovation is being driven by community. And that to be an engaging brand you must join in the conversation.

Believe me, I love this thread, this Age of Conversation thread we’ve been on for the past year or so, but I think it’s time to get more clever.

  15. Colin - first time comment, at last! Welcome and thank you.

Marko - also welcome, thanks for popping by. I can tell you we will all be watching you’re “getting more clever” with interest.

  16. I am so one of those blahs and have done the ha, too. You’ve summed up what’s been bugging me about social media evangelism for a while now.
