The Darwinism of ideas, guided user generated content and idea gardeners

This is a Piñata from the game Viva Piñata and as far as I’m concerned it’s one the most creative games I’ve played in a very long time. It’s a completely different kind of game, and a delightful change to the gore of Call of Duty 4.

The point of the game is to build a garden, a beautiful garden full of flowers, fruit and vegetables and this garden attracts little animals called Piñatas and if you’re lucky they will stay. And mate. And have babies. And get eaten. And cross breed. And become bigger, beautiful Piñatas full of lovely chocolates that are then sent out to parties all over the world.

Now that’s brilliant.

Viva Piñata is a RARE game and it’s the kind of game that they do best (and they have made some of the best games the world has ever seen), it’s a game full of wit and extremely intelligent to boot. Jesus, RARE make really funny games.

This is a “buzzlegum”

This is a game about personal creativity; you basically create your own world and every game is unique because everything you do reacts to another variable of the game (a plant, a fruit, a Piñata) in a completely different manner. You can watch your little world grow and you can watch parts of your world perish.

There’s so much this game has got me thinking about; the Darwinism of ideas, guided user generated content, and idea gardeners that I’m not really sure where to start but this game has definitely got my mind buzzing and buzzing in a way that blowing heads off with a shot gun never could.

If you think that others might been interested in this would you be so kind as to Stumble it?

  1. Can I lob a grenade into your garden and blow it to bits?

  2. I’m considering buying VP, is it worth it?

  3. Marcus - come over to England and we’ll go and climb a mountain or something. You need a cold bath.

We might have to go to another country for the mountain.
