Black Operatives School of Covert Communications

I’ve received a number of emails and phone calls since posting “director of black operatives” asking just what exactly it all means. “What are you on about?” they demanded to know. Well, it all ties into the “content will kill your agency” idea and because learning by doing is usually one of the better methods of pedagogy I’ve decided to set up the “Black Operatives School of Covert Communications”. So we can have fun and play with some ideas.

This is your mission should you choose to accept it:

Create a piece of covert communications that gets millions of people excited about fridges. That’s your mission – that’s your “content dossier”. Guide people to fridges.

Explain how the “content” would work and why you think it would benefit both the manufacturer of the fridges and potential customers. You should also explain why the incumbent advertising agency (your colleagues) wouldn’t be able to implement your piece of work.

Remember, we’re looking for “content” ideas and not advertising ideas (viral or otherwise); the client has an advertising agency doing advertising for its fridges (your colleagues) so they won’t be needing any more.

The rules of engagement are easy and are as follows:

  • Anybody can take part in the Black Operatives School of Covert Communications
  • You can submit your entry on your own or as part of a team
  • Only blog entries will be accepted (if you don’t have a blog I would suggest either blogspot.com or wordpress.com – both are free and easy to use)
  • You can do as much or as little work on your entry as you feel appropriate
  • Make sure you get a creative commons license for any work you want to submit.

The Deadline: February 2008.
If you would like to take part please leave a link to your submission in the comments of this post by the 25th of February 2008.

I’m still working on a panel of judges and there will be a nice prize (I’ll update you near to the deadline).

So that’s it. That’s the idea and I hope you like it. If you have any questions pop them in the comments section.

It would be great if a couple of people took part.

If you think that others might been interested in this would you be so kind as to Stumble it?

  1. i fucking love this marcus. whether i get around to submitting anything is anyone’s guess, but i’m gonna put on my most wickedest thinking cap and work on it.

  2. Lauren - excellent stuff young lady.

  3. although, can i just clarify - is the purpose to create true excitement and involvement. or are you trying to get people to actually buy the fridges.

  4. One could and should lead to the other but that is not necessarily part of the scope of this project.

  5. Oh, sell the fridge! Sell me one of those efficient and not so very bulky space hogs we find here. Almond. I look forward to reading more.

  6. This sound like too much fun to pass up. Time to put on my thinking cape and monocle then begin spy ops, I mean research.

Valeria - I’m expecting to see some covert action from you as well you know.

Brett - good man, good man.

  8. You’d be inviting someone on the client side? Are you sure we are capable of the deep strategic thinking the covert action demands? :D If I’m not mistaken you’re based in Berlin. I fly through Frankfurt at least once a year…

  9. The Kaiser

Valeria - everyone is welcome to take part in this. I’m actually based in Munich.
