* Buying the right shoe (#1)

First of all I would like to thank you all very much for your help concerning „learning to run“. It would seem that the most important thing is the shoe and that I just can’t walk into to any old shop and buy any old “trainer”. It would seem that I get told what shoe I should buy, which I find really very odd but that, it would appear, is just the way it is.

And I quite like that. That’s exciting.

Now, the funny thing about the street I live in is that we have loads of sporting champions in it. There is the guy who used to sell me my cigarettes who is a football world champion (you’ll find his shop at number 9) and then there is Martina Ertl (now Ertl-Renz) who used to win Olympic medals for going down a hill on skis and runs a shop with her sporty husband called “Run & Ride” (directly opposite our house at number 7).

So, I’ll be going there later today and will have all this done to my feet (The Google translation is a bit rubbish, but you get the idea).

As you can see, I take your advice very seriously so keep the tips and stuff coming in. I’m stupidly excited about all of this and it’s making “giving up” so much easier.

Oh yes. You’re on the right track, Maracas.

Don’t be conned into getting any fucking gels or water bottles or bags with pipes coming out of the back of them.

DO be conned into getting some powdered energy drink.

Tom - I can only afford the shoes. And I can’t really afford them so don’t worry about water bottles and things.

I hope this will all be filmed.

John - that is the plan yes.

Where do we buy the tickets?

  6. Marcus Says:

Gavin - I get the sneaky feeling that you are not taking this new enterprise seriously.

It is critical to be serious at this stage Marcus. Timing. Rhythm. Tempo. A time to lead and a time to follow. Nihil clustrum ultra.

You know that new pumps have to be ‘knocked in’ a bit, just like a cricket bat ? You need to get a cricket ball (cricket balls mounted on sticks are commercially manufactured for this purpose) and bang it gently all over the upper.

    Just because I haven’t commented doesn’t mean I don’t read your genius!

And for what it’s worth, I’m going to be talking to one of the ‘big 2′ sports brands soon and I’ll point them to this post so they can see the opportunity they have to preach to the unconverted.

[Plus dear Lauren has a toptastic idea too - so basically this blogging malarky is more beneficial to them than all their ad agencies put together. Oh hang on, we're one of them. Damn!]

[...] was a little like the experience of “buying a shoe” and “learning to run” – being a beginner just plain sucks and in much the same way as I [...]
