* Learning to run
Posted on December 18th, 2007 by The Shop Keeper. Filed under Marcus Brown.

I’m 36 years old. Up until three days ago I used to smoke and I smoked quite heavily; I used to smoke packets and packets of the bloody things. But I don’t anymore.
I woke up this morning and actually felt really rather good. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I felt as good as this and as I walked over the bridge towards the tube station I noticed that I was walking a little faster and with a little more bounce than I normally would.
I’m sat in the tube and spot a poster for Adidas running stuff and suddenly decide that I want to start running. I’ve never run before. Ever . But now I suddenly want to and I’m really very excited about it – which is funny because when I saw the poster last week I laughed at the sheer pomposity of it - running to the office in the morning I ask you!
So I’m going to start running. I’m not going to jog – I am not (I have decided) a jogger, I am a runner waiting to happen.
Does anybody have any tips about how to get started? You know, stuff like what shoes I should maybe consider (and how I should consider a shoe) or anything else I should maybe be aware of?
A jolly good morning to you all.

You need some of those shorts that show your knicker elastic because they’re so high up your thighs and a headband and a string vest.
Then, RUN LIKE THE WIND…..

Excellent stuff. Oh, and TLOM, I got some lovely christmas post.

Glad you liked it. I’m on fire.
Now, with regard to plimsolls - I recommend that you go to a proper running shop - where they’ll TELL you which shoes to purchase - you won’t get a choice - and you’ll end up comfortably with the grimmest looking pair available - and then you can be 100% confident that they’re the right sort for running.

Will these shoes look very ugly?

The best ones always do, Marcus.

Choose Nike.
Forrest Gump ran in Nike.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
You work for W+K. You would say that wouldn’t you Seb.

Choose New Balance.
Made by hand in Cumbria:

and when you start running marcus, keep an even pace and focus on your breathing. don’t breath too deeply at first, otherwise you’ll hyperventilate, but get into a rhythm with it. the longer/faster you run, the more you’ll need to breath, so take more breaths, but keep it even.

I should inform you Lauren, that you have just scared the shit out of Marcus.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
did i scare him because i have that kind of information, that i actually run? or because he’s a scaredy cat and feels like chickening out on the running thing. if it’s the latter, tell him to get his shit together and get out there, for fuck’s sake.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
It was the latter. I told him. He’s sulking with you now - (you know how he is).
December 18th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
Tom - those shoes looks like proper shoes. And they’re vegan.
December 18th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
Lauren - Alright already. Jesus.
December 18th, 2007 at 3:07 pm
Well done Opi - I’m very proud of you.

Go to a proper running shop to get fitted (for trainers, that is). I never realised what a difference it makes. When I bought mine they made me run up and down outside the shop before informing me I had a slight ‘roll’ to the way I run. I would have assumed they were just having a laugh were it not for the fact that they then advised me to get a particular type of trainer which has made a world of difference to how comfortable running feels, after a lot of running. Two other things: start small and go for incremental gain. Gosh, what sensible advice. I’m sounding like my mother.

Don’t cheap out on the shoes. Real running shoes aren’t the cheap ones. Most running shoes are designed to push a shopping cart around Tesco.
Set a goal like a 10k in the summer or three months from now. Post the date and time on your blog. The fear of public failure will get you out the door those days of low motivation. At does for me at least after foolishly pledging to run the NY marathon.
Use Nike+ so you can rock out, track progress and be part of the cool kids club. You also get a phone call from Lance Armstrong periodically.
Don’t wear tights. They look foolish on everyone, even Olympic gold medalists.

Marcus,
Check out this blog. http://blog.runnerslounge.com/
They’re growing quite a community of runners….which you can now, of course, join!

As I pointed out from Friday on I would be free to say about Nike whatever I wanted to. Not that I am not right now.
Apart from that: choose Nike. I run in Nike+ Moire. Good ones.
December 19th, 2007 at 8:50 am
Neil, that all sound fair enough to me.
Brett - How the fuck are you? Have you got snow? Thanks for the tip with the tights - I was a little worried about that.
Drew - many thanks for the link
Seb - according to everyone else I can’t just go and buy whatever I want. I have to buy whatever I need and that may not be Nike.

When you go to a running shop, please take a video camera. I think I may even pay a small premium to watch it.
December 19th, 2007 at 10:06 am
Gavin - you’d like that wouldn’t you? The problem is, it would be a German shop and we would be speaking German…. oh wait, you work for SAP and you are now a fluent German speaker.
(you can tell that it’s day four without the nicotine can’t you?)
December 19th, 2007 at 11:06 am
Neil is absolutely right. Go to a proper shop and put yourself in their hands.
And I’d put money on his having gone to that place in Victoria…what’s the name ? I can’t remember…..erm….RUN AND BECOME. That’s it.
You know you’re near when you see all the suits with their trousers rolled up running up and down the pavement in brand new pumps with a fitness instructor type assessing them, arms folded, serious look on their faces.
I too want to see it. Film it Marcus, PLEASE.

I’m going here:
http://www.ertl-renz.de/run/laufschuhe/
It’s run by an Olympic down-hill ski person and her triathlonesque husband. It’s right across the road from me. They have scanners, computers, people and everything. What to you think everybody?
December 19th, 2007 at 11:12 am
And I may just film it.
